HMP YOI Brinsford is a young offenders’ Institute housing both sentenced and remand prisoners aged 18 to 21 years. Since June 2016, it has also housed Category C adult male prisoners. The Education Department works closely with prison colleagues to deliver relevant courses from Entry Level to Level 2 that help prepare learners for employment upon release. They engage with employers and offer pathways to Academies in a range of vocational areas. They are proud to boast the Interserve Academy in Industrial Cleaning; the Academy was set up in partnership with Interserve to support young adults to develop employability skills and gain qualifications leading to employment with the company on release.
Vocational pathways include Barbering, Professional Cookery and Barista, Horticulture, Construction, Recycling, PC Repair, Bicycle Mechanics, Industrial Cleaning and Radio Production. English and Maths Functional Skills are compulsory for rehabilitating offenders and we have provision at Entry 1 to Level 2. In addition we provide courses in ESOL, ICT, Art, Mentoring, Customer Service, Employability, Business and Finance. Every young adult will receive a personalised induction to their provision and a bespoke pathway will be designed according to their goals and aspirations.
In the department they believe the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge will help their learners to end their offending behaviour. They engage the hardest to reach learners and encourage them to take pride in their own education and self-development. All the teachers and staff work to the College values; Inspire, Respect, Integrity, Innovate and Excellence.
