HMP Oakwood opened in 2012 and is a private sector Category C resettlement prison for males over the age of 21. It is one the largest prisons in England with a current population of 1605. This is due to rise by 501 prisoners to 2106 in the summer of 2016.
The Education department works in close partnership with G4S to enable learners to become functionally literate, highly skilled, confident and employable through a natural acquisition of learning, delivered through an embedded whole organisational approach and working in partnership with all stakeholders.
The curriculum is designed taking into account both the needs of the prisoner and the local employment needs. Courses that they currently deliver come under the pathways of: Personal & Social development and Employability, Mentoring, Employability, Health and Nutrition, Family Relations, Pre-tenancy, Customer Service, Creative Techniques (2D & 3D), Music Technology, Business and ICT, Business, Business Administration, Team Leading, ICT, iMedia, Functional Skills, English and Maths Entry – Level 2, ESOL, Vocational Training, Window fitting, Electrics, Building Maintenance, Bricklaying, Site and Bench joinery, Barbering and Hospitality (including food preparation and food service).
The Education department has an Employment Academy, working with employers to enhance a prisoner’s chance of employment upon release. It is their vision to be an outstanding provision of offender learning. The majority of their learners have been let down by the education system, and are now returning to giving it a second chance. It is therefore their aim as an education department to provide quality education having high expectations of both staff and learners alike.
