Long Lartin is a Category A High Security Dispersal prison which forms part of the High Security Directorate.
The prison, which occupies the site of a former War Department Ordnance Depot, was built in the 1960s and opened as a prison in 1971. Although originally opened as a Category C prison, it was upgraded to provide dispersal level security in 1973. Further improvements in security were made between 1995 and 1997 as a consequence of the Woodcock/Learmont reports. Additional wings were opened in June 1999 and May 2009, substantially increasing the capacity of the prison.
The Education Department works closely with its prison colleagues to deliver relevant courses that improve the skill base of the learners and helps to prepare learners for employment within the prison and eventually upon release. Courses include: English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry 1 to Level 2), ESOL, ICT, Art, Catering, Warehousing, Industrial Cleaning, Personal & social Development Skills and Business Venture.
In the department they believe the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge will help their learners to end their offending behaviour. They engage the hardest to reach learners and encourage them to take pride in their own education and self-development. As a department, they endeavour to inspire learners to achieve.
