HMP Bullingdon

HMP Bullingdon is a complex prison that has a number of functions. It is categorized as a local category B prison which a category C resettlement function, as was well as serving the courts of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, and Wiltshire. HMP Bullingdon has the capacity to hold 1114 offenders all serving a range of sentences from remand to life, with the average length of stay between 3 and 6 months.

The Education Department works closely with the prison colleagues to deliver a variety of courses that help prepare learners for employment and positive community living upon release. Courses include: English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry 1 to Level 2), IT, Business, Horticulture, Warehousing and Storage, Managing Production Operations, Barbering, Hospitality, Domestic Cookery, a Timpson’s Employment Academy and Barista coming soon! Education runs 5 days a week with morning sessions from 08.15 – 11.30 and afternoons from 13.45 – 16.30 .

Their team is predominantly full time which means that staff have the opportunity to build good relationships at work, support each other and share best practice. They offer a comprehensive site induction and regular training events for all staff to ensure that they address areas for development and are familiar with new initiatives. As a department, they endeavour to inspire learners to achieve. Learner Voice consistently reports that tutors have high expectations of themselves and their learners and that feedback from learners is acted upon to make improvements. Learners and tutors echo that they enjoy coming to education and that they feel safe whilst in Education at HMP Bullingdon.

The Education department is on a positive journey with an enthusiastic and committed approach from both Milton Keynes College and prison colleagues, this has resulted in creating a rewarding environment not only for learners but for the staff team who play a key role in transforming rehabilitation for the learners.
