A student who lost both hands during his time in the forces has received an Amends People Award at HMP Highpoint.
'Simon' is succeeding on his business courses and has become a shining light for many of his fellow learners, despite his disability. He is passionate about business and aspires to set up his own security business. His fantastic can-do attitude and determination has helped him overcome many of the obstacles he has faced.
Since being at HMP Highpoint, Simon has studied and completed his Level 1 English and maths course, Business Level 1 course and is now well on his way to completing his Level 2 Preparing to Start a Business course.
It was Simon’s passion and drive that led his business tutor Jacky Toolan to nominate him. The awards are specific to HMP Highpoint and recognise the difference colleagues and learners have made. She said: “Simon is an inspirational learner with a genuine thirst for knowledge and a determination to succeed, whatever the barriers. He is always pleasant and a pleasure to be around.”
Commenting on the awards, Business and Community Engagement Manager Lisa Haworth said: “The Amends People Awards at HMP Highpoint recognise both colleagues and learners who have gone above and beyond to make a difference to another person or group of people.”
Launched in April 2016, the scheme is open for both colleagues and learners to nominate each other. All winners were announced in a ceremony at HMP Highpoint at the end of August.
