HMP Wormwood Scrubs is a Category B prison for adult males, sentenced or on remand from the local courts. The prison has five main wings plus a number of smaller dedicated units. The prison was built between 1875 and 1891 by prisoners from Milbank Gaol. During its existence is has housed women prisoners, been a borstal and was used by the War department in the early 1940’s. The buildings were refurbished around 15 years ago at the same time a new wing was added.
There are 7 industrial workshops delivering a range of opportunities for prisoners to engage in work, receive training and attain qualifications. The prison actively sources links with employers who will consider recruiting ex-offenders. The workshops training opportunities include painting & decorating, laundry, British Industrial Cleaning Sciences (BICS) .
The main education block accommodates up to 120 learners per session and the residential wings have classroom facilities with qualified teachers supporting learning on programmed sessions each week.
