HMP Maidstone is located in the centre of Maidstone with good access to public transport and the Park and Ride drop off points. The prison has capacity for 600 men and is designated as a foreign national prison. This means that for the majority of our learners, English is not their first language. We offer a range of programmes aimed at supporting offenders to resettle, either in their country of origin or, if they have ‘leave to remain’, within the UK.
The provision is varied with everything from English as a Foreign Language, taught in classrooms and via a work based learning approach to vocational programmes such as Construction Crafts programmes and real work Staff Mess where learners achieve catering and barista qualifications whilst they serve staff and visitors. The work-based learning approach offers learning in the workplace within the prison. Workplaces include the Print Shop, Recycling Centre and the Gardens party where you could be working alongside a prison instructor, supporting the development and accreditation of literacy, language, numeracy and working life skills.
Our team is a small but dedicated team of professionals who work closely in partnership with the prison with the primary aims of supporting reduction in reoffending and resettlement. No two days are the same and we work with a very diverse population of different cultures, ages, ethnicities and religious beliefs. It makes for a very interesting backdrop against which to teach and support learners.
If you like a challenge and enjoy working with diverse groups of learners, then Maidstone is definitely the place to be.
