Greggs Academy learner, Laura, recently finished her sentence at HMP Drake Hall and became the first ever Academy learner to be given a senior job role in Greggs, immediately after release.

Laura was transferred from HMP New Hall to HMP Drake Hall at the beginning of 2014; while serving her sentence, she used her time constructively, achieving Level 2 in Numeracy and Literacy, and completing courses in Customer Service and Business Studies.

Although Laura left school aged 15 with no formal qualifications, she had a number of jobs before custody, including her last job, an Assistant Manager at Bon Marche.

In May 2015, Laura commenced work at Katharine House in Stafford, where she worked until late July. While working here, Laura attended the Greggs Academy and started a four week work experience trial in Stafford.  The manager at Greggs was so impressed with Laura; she was offered a 16 hour per week contract, which commenced late August 2015.

Regularly working five – six days per week, Laura’s drive and work ethic was such that the manager started training Laura in Senior Sales. While employed, she has taken the initiative to complete a number of driving lessons, and is hoping to soon be ready to take her test.

HMP Drake Hall’s Outwork Department was delighted to receive an email from Beckie Rowland, Recruitment Advisor at Greggs, stating that Laura had been offered the position of Senior Sales Member at a store in Nottingham, which commenced at the start of August 2016.

From the employability skills obtained while attending the Greggs Academy in Drake Hall, Laura is a worthy example of the opportunities the Academy can provide learners; with the right attitude and work ethic, learners have every chance at gaining employment upon release, while achieving valuable lifelong skills.
