HMP Whatton is a leading prison for the treatment of male sex offenders and is nationally recognised for its programmes to reduce re-offending; CALM, Thinking Skills, Relationship, Sex Offender Treatment Programme (SOTP) and the Adapted SOTP (for offenders with a low IQ who are often unable to read or write or have severe mental health difficulties).

Only offenders willing to attend the Sex Offender Treatment Programmes (SOTP) and with six months remaining on their prison sentence are sent to HMP Whatton and new receptions are received from all over the country.

The education department at HMP Whatton administrates over 2000 enrolments per year and supports over 500 learners to achieve their learning goals and employment aspirations. The education department currently enjoys a 93% success rate across all of its courses. A broad curriculum is offered to support prisoners to gain Functional Skills in English and maths, employability skills and independent living skills. Their new Self Employment Academy provides courses that enable offenders to move into self-employment upon release. Many courses are embedded into the prison workshops enabling prisoners to gain a qualification through on-the-job training.
