HMP Sudbury is a Category D men's prison, located in the village of Sudbury in Derbyshire, England. HMP Sudbury offer all levels of English and maths to support students up to level 2. The classes are lively, with innovative teaching methods and themed days to encourage deeper interest and personal development.

Within the wider department the curriculum offers courses ranging from vocational, softer skills to more academic courses. The Officer’s Mess for example provides real life context for catering skills, as does horticulture to level 2. Employability is a central aspect of the department with such courses as NVQS in rail engineering and the construction trades. Other career paths are indicated with courses such as counselling, book keeping and business. ICT is offered on a daily basis and for drop in during the evening. All in all a comprehensive offering suitable for the open estate and preparation through the gate.

The college team is a central stakeholder in the prison for the resettlement of offenders. They work with the resettlement team, offender management and other departments to achieve successful release. An example of this is the preparation for release courses that meets offenders need to work on charity placement, delivered by the education team on behalf of the prison. Teaching staff have close links with the offender supervisors and contribute to offender sentence plans at all stages including feedback on education progress, behaviour and punctuality.

The mission of the education department is to focus on the offender learning journey within the prison’s rehabilitive culture. They deliver this in a learning environment that is relevant, current and personalised, centred on personal responsibility and employability.

HMP Sudbury strive to see a real difference in their students when they leave them- empowered by their gains in life skills, employability, and sound functional skills for everyday living. They achieve this through their non-judgemental, inclusive and diverse teaching culture that they strive for in their professionalism in class every day.
